Résumé :
|
The author has just completed a basic textbook in climatology and applied climatology (Climatology: Fundamentals and Applications, McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, 1974, 412 pp)While the present Workbook does develop certain of the materials covered in that text, the exercises are still sufficiently self-contained that they may be used to support courses in climatology developed around other texts. The instructor may adapt the different exercises to a wide range of approaches to climatology. The principal aim of the exercises is to provide practical examples of different applications of climatic data; from them the student may begin to see the significance of applying climatic knowledge to many different facets of everyday life. The original Workbook in Applied Climatology has been available and in use for three years. The author has received very positive feedback from students concerning the different exercises. However, as with any written document, certain problems were found in some of the exercises which needed to be changed. Since the Workbook is only part of a whole course in applied climatology, its use cannot require more than a fair share of the student's time. It was found that certain exercises in the original Workbook were too long and required too much time outside of class. Thus, one of the major efforts in preparing this revised Workbook has been to shorten each of the exercises so that they can easily be done within a two-hour span without leaving out essential material. There has also been a rearrangement of material which should help in the development from one exercise to another. Finally, the original exercise on soil tractionability has been removed entirely and replaced by one on water budget factors and trop yield which appears to be more relevant. It is hoped that the present version of the Workbook will prove to be more useful than the original Workbook since the exercises have been carefully edited to provide exemples of climatology in action with a minimum of "busy work" type computations.
